Statement From Elaine Berry, Chair ACDP:
What happened October 31, between Graham police officers and Alamance County deputies and unarmed peaceful protesters is unacceptable. Law enforcement officers used chemical irritants against men, women, and even children who were exercising their constitutional right of assembly and celebrating the importance of voting. The aftermath led to 17 or more participants being arrested and charged. If we have learned nothing else from the tragic events of recent months, we should have learned that law enforcement officers should do everything possible to de-escalate tensions in such situations, not inflame them.
The Alamance County Democratic Party is committed to the protection of every citizen’s access to voting. Whether or not it was intended, the actions of law enforcement officers yesterday may have resulted in voter suppression.
Finally, in order to prevent any repeat of the events that occurred in Graham yesterday, the Alamance County Democratic Party calls for a thorough and independent review of the actions of the Graham police and Alamance County deputies at the rally yesterday.
This is not apartisan issue. This is a civil rights issue.
