Freed by Court Ruling, Republicans Step Up Effort to Patrol Voting

NYT Full article

Republican officials seek to recruit 50,000 poll watchers and spend millions to fight voter fraud. Democrats say the real goal is to stop them from voting.

The Republican Party, the Trump campaign and conservative activists are mounting an aggressive national effort to shape who gets to vote in November — and whose ballots are counted.

Its premise is that a Republican victory in November is imperiled by widespread voter fraud, a baseless charge embraced by President Trump but repeatedly debunked by research. Democrats and voting rights advocates say the driving factor is politics, not fraud — especially since Mr. Trump’s narrow win in 2016 underscored the potentially crucial value of depressing turnout by Democrats, particularly minorities.

The Republican program, which has gained steam in recent weeks, envisions recruiting up to 50,000 volunteers in 15 key states to monitor polling places and challenge ballots and voters deemed suspicious. That is part of a $20 million plan that also allots millions to challenge lawsuits by Democrats and voting-rights advocates seeking to loosen state restrictions on balloting. The party and its allies also intend to use advertising, the internet and Mr. Trump’s command of the airwaves to cast Democrats as agents of election theft.

The efforts are bolstered by a 2018 federal court ruling that for the first time in nearly four decades allows the national Republican Party to mount campaigns against purported voter fraud without court approval. The court ban on Republican Party voter-fraud operations was imposed in 1982, and then modified in 1986 and again in 1990, each time after courts found instances of Republicans intimidating or working to exclude minority voters in the name of preventing fraud. The party was found to have violated it yet again in 2004.

“Republicans will have an Election Day operations program “that probably no other presidential campaign has had before,” Josh Helton, a Republican consultant, said at a meeting of the Conservative Political Action Committee in March. “It’s going to be all hands on deck.”

Poll Observers Needed

The Republicans are going to be putting people at the polls to intimidate and challenge voters right to vote. Trump mentioned it in the debate again.

The Alamance County Democratic Party alongside NCDP and Biden/Harris Coordinated Campaign is recruiting poll observers to help monitor and report on possible irregularities at polling locations. This is different from poll greeting in that poll observers are there to record and report and help protect all voters. Trainings will be provided as well as PPE (masks, gloves, sanitation stations). If you are interested. Here’s an article about why this is so important HERE

4. Alamance County needs election workers for the 2020 Elections!

Wondering what you can do to help ensure local elections meet the challenges of this health crisis?

Check this link to the Alamance County Election Official Application. We especially need elections workers during the 17-day early voting period. We have a new early voting location at the Elmira Community Center in Burlington and we have newly expanded weekend voting, including Sunday voting. This means we need more elections workers than in the past. And the COVID virus has meant that many of our predominantly older elections workers who are more vulnerable have chosen not to return to work this year’s election. You can also fill out the NC State Board of Elections Democracy Heroes form to be contacted by BOE staff: https://www.ncsbe.gov/get-involved

99 Reasons to Flip NC

32. TO FULLY REPEAL HB2 AND END LGBTQ DISCRIMINATION

Proposed and signed into law in less than 12 hours, HB2 became widely known for the restrictions on transgender bathroom use that made our state “a pioneer in bigotry.” But its impact is much broader. The bill also bars NC cities and towns from enacting anti-discrimination laws on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, making it legal for private companies throughout the state to fire anyone because they are gay. Full repeal of HB2 is not enough. We need full legal protection from discrimination for LGBTQ North Carolinians.
