68 Days Until Election Day

Mobile & Print List of 2020 Democratic Candidates HERE

Governor of North Carolina

Roy Cooper

As governor of North Carolina, Roy has fought for good-paying jobs, strong public schools, access to quality, affordable health care, and a safer and more just North Carolina.

Roy has announced tens of thousands of new jobs across North Carolina, including in North Carolina’s rural and economically distressed counties. He has also created initiatives such as NC Job Ready, Finish Line Grants, and Hometown Strong.

Governor Cooper worked with members of both parties to repeal HB2 to fight discrimination and repair the damage to North Carolina’s economy and reputation. His leadership put North Carolina back on a path to success and opened the door for thousands of new jobs and the return of concerts, shows, and major athletic events such as the NBA All-Star Game.

He has also issued Executive Orders prohibiting workplace discrimination and establishing paid parental leave for 56,000 state employees, and launched a Clean Energy Plan to create good-paying jobs, increase the use of renewable energy, and fight climate change.

From his first day in office, Roy has fought for better teacher pay and funding for our classrooms. He has pushed the Republican legislature to go much farther than it wanted to go resulting in a 9.5% teacher raise since he took office and an improvement in the national rankings. Under his leadership, North Carolina has expanded pre-kindergarten programs and re-established the Teaching Fellows Program to recruit and support highly qualified teachers in North Carolina.

Roy has fought tirelessly for Medicaid expansion that would extend coverage to half a million people, including families and veterans, without additional state tax dollars. Medicaid expansion would also bring tens of thousands of jobs to North Carolina, reduce the cost of private health insurance and keep rural hospitals from closing their doors.

Together with the most diverse and qualified cabinet in the history of the state, Roy has fought for a safer and more just Carolina. He issued an Executive Order to make North Carolina the first state in the south to ban state funding to any organization that engages in conversion therapy, a scientifically dubious and dangerous practice that is harmful to the LGBTQ community.

With Great sadness

Gary Cooper

Alamance Democrats,
It is with great sadness that we are letting you know that we have lost one of the most dedicated Democrats in Alamance County, Gary Cooper. Gary truly loved the Democratic Party. Gary’s pastor, Randy, and Gary’s brother, Rod, were able to spend time with him this morning before his passing. Please pray for Gary’s brother and the rest of the Cooper family during this time of loss. Arrangements will be shared, once they are made, but there are currently no plans to hold a public service.

Gary loved his church, Elon Community Church UCC, and he loved the Democratic Party. He was passionate about both. He was an active member of PFLAG, Alamance Senior Democrats, Alamance Democratic Women, the Alamance LGBTQ Caucus, and a long-time representative for Alamance on the NCDP State Executive Committee. Perhaps more importantly, Gary was a good man and a beloved friend to all who had the good fortune to know him. God rest your soul, sweet Gary. You will be missed!

Response to Amy Galey’s ongoing baseless attacks.

JD Wooten Responds

“The fact of the matter is that I bought a home using VA benefits afforded to veterans like myself, but I later decided to move to run for office after watching Republicans in Raleigh like Amy Galey refuse to stand up for hard-working families in Alamance and Guilford counties. Her shameful attack on VA benefits is an attack on all service members. She should be focused on bringing our community together, not tearing it apart.”  Full Response HERE

Reason 68 to Flip NC

68. FOR A LIVING WAGE

North Carolina has the lowest allowable minimum wage at the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour. In 2014, the GOP-controlled legislature passed a law restricting municipalities from establishing higher minimum wage standards. Over 30% of NC’s workforce earns a wage below $11.34 per hour and would directly benefit from a modest increase to the minimum wage.

Wondering what you can do to help ensure local elections meet the challenges of this health crisis?

Alamance County needs election workers for the 2020 Elections!

Check this link to the Alamance County Election Official Application. We especially need elections workers during the 17-day early voting period. We have a new early voting location at the Elmira Community Center in Burlington and we have newly expanded weekend voting, including Sunday voting. This means we need more elections workers than in the past. And the COVID virus has meant that many of our predominantly older elections workers who are more vulnerable have chosen not to return to work this year’s election.

You can also fill out the NC State Board of Elections Democracy Heroes form to be contacted by BOE staff: https://www.ncsbe.gov/get-involved
